Correct!

Gone With the Wind is definitely about ethnic strife and a search for identity (Scarlett O'Hara).  Charming Rhett Butler was a big time gambler, and there is a scene in which he plays cards with his jailors.  But he never goes to Las Vegas during the film, so he can't be considered a "whale."

However, there are several sympathetic characters of color, including "Mammy", played by Hattie McDaniel.  But you cleverly caught the misspelling in the question. It should have said, "…one of the characters could sound like a wail."  Not "whale."

Of course the "wailing character" could be none other than "Prissy", the young slave girl who didn't "know nuthin' 'bout birthin' no babies." Her annoying screams of distress were one of the reasons the South lost the war.  That, and the banjo.
